Wildlife enthusiast James Jablon is raising money for his animal centre in a rather unusual way – by spending January living in the lion enclosure.

Who wouldn't want to live with lions?
Who wouldn't want to live with lions?

Jablon moved into a fenced enclosure with two African lions on January 31, and will spend the rest of the month with the big cats.

He will sleep in the hay near the the two lions, Lea and Ed, which he has raised since they were cubs.

While most people would be terrified by the prospect, Jablon’s main concern is how to pass the time while the lions are asleep.

However, he does have a small area fenced off in the enclosure in case he needs to escape, and plans to build a shelter in the trees as a place to hide in case the lions fight.

He’s undertaking the brave challenge in an effort to raise money for his Florida-based animal refuge, Wildlife Rehabilitation of Hernando.

He runs the centre with help from a few volunteers and his 13-year-old daughter, and has no paid staff.

The stunt is being streamed live online, with Jablon also keeping visitors updated with live web chats.
