What are the smartest dogs in the world? We all love our dogs, and most of us believe our own dog must be the smartest ever. But is your dog's breed known as one of the smartest? We've compiled a list of the top 10 most intelligent dogs ever.  If your dog isn't on this list, don't despair. Because sometimes, having a dog with very high intelligence can have its drawbacks.

For example, if a highly intelligent dog is left at home alone all day, they can get bored and become destructive and/or neurotic.  On the other hand, a dog with limited intelligence can be left at home all day, and not even realize you’re gone until a few minutes before you arrive home!

The top 10 most intelligent breeds of dog are:

#10 Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian Cattle Dog is a very active breed. They need to be exercised on a regular basis, both mentally and physically.

As they were originally bred to herd in cattle in Australia (hence the name), they are freethinking, resourceful, and very protective of their property, including people!

#9 Rottweiler

The Rottweiler, #9 on our list, has a fearsome reputation that is largely undeserved.

The Rotti is only average in intensity, and make a great family dog. Not only is the Rottweiler intelligent, but extremely courageous and reliable.

#8 The Papillon

Does this dog scare you at all? Well it should, because Papillons are actually a lot tougher than they look! Some would characterize Papillons as a little moody and aggressive, but they are simply very possessive of their masters and “home turf”.

Another very intelligent dog, and very easy to train.

#7 Labrador Retriever

An extremely loving, affectionate, and patient dog, the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world.

They love to work, and need a lot of exercise. Without proper exercise, Labs have been known to develop weight problems.

Because of their good nature, and love of children and other dogs, they are a very popular family dog.

#6 Shetland Sheepdog

Many Shetland owners swear that their dog has nearly human intelligence! Shelties were originally bred to herd hundreds of sheep and cattle, requiring great concentration and, of course, intelligence.

They can be a little wary of strangers and children, but are very loyal and affectionate within their own family. In fact, the Sheltie very much craves human companionship.

I think it is incredibly retarded that you get mad just because your dog is not at number 1.I have a lab and I'm not getting mad about it.Every breed of dog is smart. They say Basenjis aren't smart.HA!That's because they don't own one.The ones that are lower that the Border have only THE slistest amount of smaller intelligence.People, just deal with it.I know how asmart a husky was,but PEOPLE!COME ON!THIS IS A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF DOGS!
JUST
FREAKING
DEAL
WITH
IT!!!!!

Oh and the guy who got all mad about German Shephards being at number three?Yeah AT LEAST BE HAPPY HE GOT IN THE LIST!!!!!!

Ray | 27 Nov 2008 - 09:31
I had nothing but Labs and I think they should be rated higher. I have 3 black ones at the present time. Labs are what I call "freaky" or "human" smart. Like my 10yr. old Lab, Blackie. One day he caught a lizard like he does all the time , but he only got half of it, the other was stuck on the house. He dropped the half lizard on the ground and was about to roll on it, but he looked at it with his head cocked, and then got up and went to get the other half from the house! He then dropped it by the other half and rolled on it like normal! He knew he didn't have the whole lizard. My Mom told me this and she said she could hardly belive what she saw! It doesn't surpise me that much though. He learned how to open gates just by watching me. Go Labs!

This data was based on scientific fact. I have a Black Labrador Retriever and she definattely deserves to be on this list, which she is. I also have an Italian Greyhound, who is ranked # 60 out of 79. The toy breeds tend to be less intelligent than the larger working dogs.

jas | 8 Sep 2008 - 18:07
shi tzu poo is not a breed!! Its a "designer dog" Its what breeders do when they have an accidentangry. When their perfect dog "accidentally" breeds with another breed it causes a MUTT. The breeder doesn't want to be stuck with these dogs so they slap on a fancy name and sell them for the same price as a purebredangry some of you people are stupid enough to buy onewassat you could have realised it wasn't a serious breedwassatCan you even say the "breed" without smilinglaughing "malti poo" "cocker poo" laughinglaughingIf u bought one you were sucked in buy either a BYB (backyard breeder) or puppy mill.angryangryangry

jas | 8 Sep 2008 - 17:59
Guys guys...my favourite breed is the st bernard followed by the doberman close behind. This is the percentage of dog breeds. Ok so your dog may be so smart but the percentage of that breed may not be. I know for sure the doberman should be on the list thoughsmilelaughingso slow down....

ST BERNARDS = COOLEST
DOBERMANS = DOGS

wassat Hands down, Siberian Huskies are one of the most intelligent. It's just that they are so independent it is hard to train them, maybe. For example, my husky would raid the "cookie" jar and hide them (not eat them). If I didn't give him a coookie when he wanted, he would go get one of his own. His hidden stash could last months! I sent him to class with somebody else and never even knew the command, yet the next week he was the best. The teacher kept saying, oh you must have really been practicing...NOT. He knew to sit at the curb with the obedience collar and to stand with the confirmation collar. The confirmation teacher didn't even know we were taking obedience on the side (she forbid it). He even figured out how to open the door if it wasn't locked and get out. I ended up with 6 and boy, they are smart compared to the other breeds I've had.

I have to go with Border Collie`s . Some dogs you can fool once but not twice, Border`s, you don`t get that far...

sooz | 24 Jul 2008 - 08:00
I have a cockapoo and a sheltie, and the cockapoo is (even though I hate to admit it) waaaaay smarter than my sheltie is! He beats her in agility exercises and learns a heck of lot faster than she does too! But...I love both of them and I think ALL breeds of dogs have traits and characteristics that are outstanding. We are all dog lovers; so why the fighting?

The 35 year Trainer | 21 Jul 2008 - 22:27
OMG, ok lets starts by saying that
1. Dogs are only as smart as their owners!
2. This list in most part is WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!
3. Intelligent is based on how the dog figures out how to do something on his own!, NOT how easy they train! Training has nothing to do with smarts!
As a trainer of "All Breads" for 35 years I'll tell you what I have learned and you take it form there!
The True Top Dogs:
1.BORDER COLLIE, "Hands down!" extremely loyal, but if your not going to give them 100% of you attention all the time then don't get one! these dogs will make you wish you had kids! They are so smart that they will out smart you most of the times! When you look at them , you can see that their working things out in there mind, yes that smart! "SCARY"
2.1 AUSTRALIAN SHEEP DOG, just like the the BC smart and they need a job to do, and they love the out doors and good with the family!
2.2 GOLDEN RETRIEVER, one thing about this dog is that not only are they smart but their number 1 on the top ten list for all around dogs. So if you want to get a smart dog that is good with every one then this is your dog!
2.3 ENGLISH COCKER SPANIEL, thats right, extremely loyal, they are very fast learners, also 2 on the top all around dogs! Good with kids and family!
2.4 BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG, this one is a BIG dog but very good with people and easy to live with, can be at peace at home or on the run. Number 3 on the list of all around dogs.
2.5.LABRADOR RETRIEVER, great hunting dog, smart easy to train but a bit fumbling and Clumsy when there puppy's but get better when there older!

These are the dogs I recommend as extremely loyal, very smart, east to train, and good dogs!

As for the others and why I didn't place them on the list!
1.Poodles, yes there are easy to train but score low on intelligent, they have problems with coping new things, and figuring and adapting to new problems!
2.German Shepherds, again easy to train but bad with people and kids! have been known to bit people do to their protective instinct and can have a bad nature!
3. Rottweiler, stay away from this one, if you want to see your kids grow old! Very protective instinct for them selfs! Will bite for no reason!

And the list goes down from here. Picking a dog should be done with all factors in mind, It's important to do research on the dog and your family's needs. But most, "Remember you not buying a dog you gaining a family member!"

For all you dog lovers out there that disagree with my picks, I sorry, but complaining about it will not make your dog or you more intelligent in ant way, or change the simple facts of what is!

alan | 19 Jul 2008 - 09:04
I have a Australian Cattle Dog who has all ready learned most tricks that it takes most dogs a year to learn. I was shocked to see them at number 10 but not alot of people have them they will drive you up a wall with there high pitch bark when bored. Not for the non active person this dog can go for hours of playing and learning tricks very good watch dog despite size. should be in top 5 There Mate!

Dev | 17 Jul 2008 - 12:22
I think its dumb to get upset whetger ur breed of dog is up there or not. It doesnt meen they're not smart, It just means the other are smarter. It's not that offending...

obviously most of you people have never had the pleasure of owning the best breed of dog on the planet. As well as being the most loyal and wanting to please their master so much that it will eventually be the cause of their annhialation.Of course i am talking about my dog and my number one favourite....The American Pitbull Terrier.

carla | 3 Jul 2008 - 12:22
what about boxers?? i thinking of geetin a boxer, i'v seen hes a canine clown..

rlycats24 | 22 Jun 2008 - 06:41
I would have to say that English Springer Spaniels should be on that list to... My dog is like VERY smart =)

He knows: Sit, stay, come, lay down, off, speak, over, crawl, shake, high 5, easy, beg (sit pretty), play dead, through, roll over, under

But he tought himself: he learned how to unlock are door, open and shut are door, he can almost climb up a tree, how to swim, he learned how to get out of his dog pen, and he can open up are refridgerator (and there is no rope or anything on it, just a handle)

rlycats24 | 22 Jun 2008 - 06:32
I think that Saint Bernards should be on there angry My saint bernard learned so many tricks in less then 1 months smile Her trainer said that she was the best dog she had ever trained tongue
SHe learned: sit, stay, come, go inside/outside, high 5, shake, lay down, off, and over smile

Beat that =)

P.S. Poodles are like the dumbest dogs ever!!!! My mom had one and that thing couldn't learn a trick to save it's life, finally when it was like 14 it learned to sit... some what, but then it died crying

pitbull are the most stupid dog in the world, they
don't know shit except to bite and attack people.
And that's why you don't see any military or police trained a pitbull because their hard to trained and simply because their stupid. It's to obvious mostly who have pitbull are gang banger, drug addicts, and those rapper shit singer,it reflect their personalities.

Wantsapuppy | 5 Jun 2008 - 05:31
The smartest dog I had ever owned was a Chocolate Labrador/Doberman Pincher mix. He was full grown when we got him and he had little to no obedience training so he was wild. We also got his brother who looked more like a Doberman. After a couple years we were moving so we gave them both away. The Choc Lab/Doberman however escaped from the new owners (that lived a couple miles from us) and somehow found his way back to us. So we kept him at my grandmothers. There he learned to slip out of every collar. He even learned to CLIMB out of a 7 foot high metal fenced pen with plywood on top (which he moved to the side with his nose). This dog was determined to do what he wanted to do. At adult age I taught him to sit, stay, catch food out of the air, and while he learned to come he preferred to run away on his own :). He was very good at the stay command, I could tell him to stay and walk away for a couple minutes, go back and he'll still be sitting there (even though he hated being still). This dog could of done some amazing things if he had the right training from puppy age.

som1 | 3 Jun 2008 - 11:06

I read a book that a man wrote on about his dogs. he said that his border collie was the smartest dog in the world. His BC did what he did with only watchig his owner 1 time, and the man said it took him months to get it done right!winkwinkwinklaughing:smile
: P.S. Why are poodles on the list! My dog runs away all the time, and he does not learn a thing when I tell him not to.

I think that it wasn't a mistake to put labs on the list. People always say you can't teach old dogs new tricks but my 10 year old lab is steal learning new things.

tam | 11 May 2008 - 12:11
yorkies should be in there :c. no fair!!!

Poodle | 4 May 2008 - 07:57
poodles are smart... what's with everyone saying shihtpoo and cockpoo and maltpoo being smart... you guys must be lame enough that those dogs seem smart to you...

any dog bred as a fashion accessory is just obnoxious... toy poodles are annoying too but at least they are smart for their class...

those something-poo dogs sure have an advantage being mixed... but even more so with with a poodle... they need all the help that they can get with intelligence... so why not pick the poodle #2

| 1 May 2008 - 09:14

Megan | 26 Apr 2008 - 05:21
I think the smartest dogs are the Border Collie and the GOlden Retreiver. But I think that every animal is really smart people just dont see it. If people took the time to really look at how smart animals are I think they would be amazed.

| 25 Apr 2008 - 20:34
It's a toss-up between Border Collies and German Shepherds, though I'm leaning toward the BC. My current BC comes into my room and knocks my hand off the computer mouse when he wants to go for a run. If I scold him, he goes out and comes back a few minutes later with his ball-thrower in his mouth. Got the message yet??

When we're in the park he hides behind things (trees, bushes, benches etc) and I can see him peeking out to see if I've noticed him. The moment I make like I'm looking somewhere else, he bolts across the park as if he's caught me... again!! This is not an exaggeration. BCs are clever. Cheers.

Smart doesn't always mean they have a willingness to train. I have a papillon, who is very intelligent, you can tell just by looking at her. She follows us around all day and stares at us intently just because she's so curious about what we're doing/how we're doing it. She is a great problem solver and has figured out several ways to get us to do what she wants. She can figure out which way a door will open, etc. But she has her own mind and isn't that easy to train. Unlike some big, dim-witted dogs I have known, she wants to do her own thing and doesn't like being commanded. I love her just the same, but sometimes I wish she was a bit more stupid.

Mark | 31 Mar 2008 - 03:06
I really believe Labrador Retrievers should be in the top three. I have owned three of them and they are very smart and eager to please. These dogs are constantly used as working dogs, ( seeing eye dogs, search and rescue, drug sniffing dogs and so on. They are also great hunting dogs. One of my dogs would react to just the movement of my eyes. Great dogs.

dear Caitlen,
border collies are wonderful pets... if you have a big yard and very secure! Borders are escape artists! and they love to get exercise so you have to have limited working time and make sure you don't feed them too much or they'll get fat and that's not standard in that breed. Borders are very intelligent and very nice but watch out! they love to CHASE! And when they CHASE they Chase cars and then they get hit so make sure you read up ont hem a little!

someone | 16 Mar 2008 - 02:33
dear Nathalie,
Put a tape on for her it will sooth her, or take her on a walk b4 and after work. You can also get another dog but that's expensive, u may beable to let a nieghbor watch her. She sounds like a cute dog 2. U will not traumatize her don't worry just give her a treat after work everyday and she'll know you love her. And dogs, unlike humans, adjust to a new schedual after 3 days so she won't feel a thing.also you could get her a stuffed animal and a bed and set them together.......and to everyone else, i found the other five so... yeah.

angry I was upset that there wasnt more people with ACD s that left comment. My experience with cattle dogs goes back a long way. I have owned 5 of them and they by far surpass any border collie I have seen. My personal opinion is that the reason they are number 10 on the list is not many people have the breed, or appreciate the ruggedness of the breed. they are sometimes overly protective. They are the most loyal breed I have ever had. I have worked at rescues and owned my own rescue. so I've been around alot of breeds. Hands down the Queensland Heeler, ACD , Blue Heeler , Red Heeler , or Cattle dog is the smartest dog in the world whatever you may call them!!!!!!!!!!!

Test how smart your dog is by teaching it to recognize a name for all of its toys!! Our dog can fetch any of his toys out of his toy box just by asking him "where's your Ring"? It's great mental stimulation!! We have names for all his toys: ball, blue, kong, rings, yellow, red (we like to name them after their color or shape) - even his chews have names like "compressed pigskin".

Jessica | 25 Feb 2008 - 07:56
Our cattle dog/collie is also one of the most stubborn dogs we have ever known - you can't make him do something he does not want to do. By the way, the currently ranked smartest dog in the world is a weimareiner by the name of Chalcy, and she shows that individuals of different breeds can be exceptionally smart even if the breed is not in the top 10!!

I have a collie/australian cattle dog mix, who is so unbelievably smart. Took less than two days to housebreak him at 7 weeks old. When I enrolled him in his first adult training classes at 6 months old, the trainer used him to show how to teach a new trick, and by the second time going through a trick, he caught on. The trainer would use the little toy breeds to show what to do if your dog takes awhile to catch on. True to cattle dog nature, our dog is extremely protective of us and wary of all strangers. We have a personal trainer now to work on overcoming some of his overprotectiveness and territorialness towards other dogs and to get him ready for agility training. He learned in one week how to heel the correct way (stay at your left hip) and keep his eyes on you during walks so he can follow hand signals. That takes about 8 weeks of daily training for most dogs! Our dog requires at least two 1-hour physical activities such as walks/jogs a day, usually morning and afternoon, on top of 1-2 hours of mental stimulation a day such as working on tricks or obedience. Without the mental stimulation - he becomes bored and frustrated which leads to the cattle dog non-stop barking. We love our dog and recommend the breed/mix to any EXPERIENCED and hands on owner. Not for beginners or people who want a dog that will be content to lay at your feet all day.

I have a 12 week old Australian Shepherd puppy and I can't believe that these dogs are not up in the top 10 or even the top 20 most intelligent dogs. At 10 weeks on the dot my dog was fully house trained, knew how to sit, lay down and come on command and knows not to leave a non-fenced in yard. The only downfall is the teething but he is still a puppy and knows what yes, no and stop means pretty well. This puppy has been brought over to several family members homes for a few hours at a time and has never urinated inside any of the homes and is so playful and obeying. Australian Shepherds are truly wonderful dogs and so intelligent, definately up there with border collies and the most intelligent dogs for sure.

i think labs are awsome i have had three lad pups and they understood all the commands quite easily.my pup always takes my cofeelaughing

Neil | 15 Feb 2008 - 08:02
The reason there is no picture of a yorkie is because this is not a blog about the most ugly and most obnoxious dogs in the world. They are completely rude and most likely the dumbest breed in the world.

TJ | 14 Feb 2008 - 05:41
I forgot to mention (from #47) that she also understands and quickly learned the hand signals for all of her commands. This really comes in handy!

TJ | 14 Feb 2008 - 05:37
Response to number 32...

We have a border collie. She is incredibly smart and beautiful. She knows all of her commands and learned them VERY quickly (on the first or second try) when we got her as a puppy. However, DO NOT get a border collie if you do not even remotely think that you'll be able to fully incorporate them into the family. Border collies were bred to work, so if they aren't an active part of the family and if you don't have the time to exercise them they will be very unhappy and even sometimes destructive. Ours goes fishing, hiking, camping, jogging, etc. with us and she loves going anywhere in the car. We take her on 16 hour trips and for cross-U.S.A. camping trips and she does very well. She is a GREAT watchdog, too. Just make sure that if you get one, you don't ignore her (no pet should be ignored anyway)! She has done fine with any cats that we've ever had, and she even tries hard to keep the cats out of trouble! She'll be happy with you and a companion to you for as long as she lives if you just take the time to train her well and to love her.

I have a question, why isn't Siberian Huskies listed among these breeds? I have owned several Sibes and they are, in my opinion, truly intelligent dogs. All the Sibes that I have ever encountered in my life, have been very smart in many ways, such as the art of escaping (and returning) and vocalizing. I don't know of any other dogs that can plan an escape. Mine has and does, and when I have thought that there was no way out, she has found a way out. Suffice it to say, though when mine escapes, she does come back. Sibes are classified as working dogs, so wouldn't it stand to reason that if 8 out of 10 dogs listed are working dogs (except the papillion and poodle), shouldn't the Sibes be classified as "smrt" as well?

I have a jack russell terrier and he is the smartest dog I have ever known. He figured out how to get on the table and drink my cup of coffee.

TXHLDEM | 13 Feb 2008 - 04:45
I'll go along with Golden Retrievers and Border Collies. I love labs too, but they just aren't as smart as the herding group. I swear the Pembroke Welsh Corgi I had may have been the smartest dog that ever lived. She knew the meaning of more words in the English language than most of the people I deal with.

jenna | 10 Feb 2008 - 10:13
i love labs too. they are awesome. they are the best. i have one she is very smart her name is sandy. she can catch a fribie in thin air

julia | 10 Feb 2008 - 10:08
labs rule and i think they should be higher on the list they are smart

| 9 Feb 2008 - 10:00
Border Collie female. Great at frisbee. When I'm tired I just throw frisbee. When she's tired we go inside.

Fenced yard so if she wants to go out again she runs after squirrels and rabbits. I leave a large enough hold in the fence to let them in or I raise the gate but not to high to allow dogs to enter. Cats? Okay, if they are small enough to get in but Border Collies don't hurt cats. They catch them, but no damage done.

BC's are the perfect dog. If no fence, walk them around the lot line once with the dog on the line and you on the right of the dog (clockwise). They'll never leave the lot line.

I have a sheltie pup and they really are smart dogs. I show dog agility and it is an awesome sport! Anyone who wants a real relationship with your dog and to have the time of your life with your best friend, try it. My sheltie pup Rio is in training and I also show a border. These dogs deserve to be on the list and could also make the top for the cutest and most lovable!

winkI have spent a lot of time training and being around dogs. To me The DOBERMAN PINSCHER is the most intelligent breed in the world, and many people in the dog world agree.

| 3 Feb 2008 - 16:34
cryingMy "cockapoo" just past. He was so perfect I wanted to do a breed test befor his time, and when I found out he was part poodle I was not surprised. The he was one of the smartest dogs I ever had; he was a service dog and a best friend. I truly feel mixed breeds are healthy and smart.laughing

i refuse to believe that a jack russel terrior is not on this list of 10 smartest dogcrying i also refuse to believe that a poodle, which is the most ugliest iv ever seen, is number two where a jack should be, nor that a rottweiler has been put to number nine, this upsets me
