Meet Eclyse – an animal that looks like it was assembled in one of those dodgy garages where they weld halves of two stolen cars together.

Eclyse the Zorse

But Eclyse isn't the result of some crazed Doctor Dolittle with a god complex. It's a zorse – a zebra/horse hybrid, born on a ranch in Germany. And she's the product of a holiday romance.

While most zorses have stripes across their whole body, Eclyse only has two blocks of stripes – on her face and her rear.

The pure white areas she gets from her mother, a horse called Eclipse. Eclipse's owners sent her to a ranch in Italy for a while – where she met a rugged, handsome zebra called Ulysses.

One thing led to another – and when she got back home to Germany, Eclipse surprised her keepers by producing a little half-horse, half-zebra with highly unusual markings.

Ranch spokesman Udo Richter commented: 'You can tell she is a mix just by looking at her. But in temperament she can also exhibit characteristics from each parent.

'She is usually relatively tame like a horse but occasionally shows the fiery temperament of a zebra, leaping around like one.'

Since I was a kid, I've wanted to see what would happen if you crossed an Appaloosa and a zebra. No stranger than a mule (an extremely useful and wonderful animal). But, since they are half "true wild horse", they belong in the hands of experienced horsemen; zebras developed in an environment full of large, toothy predators and have strong survival skills (and powerful kicks). I've trained a few mustangs (merely feral horses) including one who ran wild for 8 years. That was a learning experience. Handling a "zorse" would be a great learning experience, but one should start with a solid knowledge of horses.

i wonder what it tastes like....yum?

H | 9 Jul 2007 - 05:45
This does nothing for the gene pool. They are different species and will not have fertile offspring. Different breeds can reproduce and create new breeds. Not different species.

I think she is BEAUTIFUL! Some of our greatest blessing to us come in the most unexpected ways. I have 4 grandchildren they are all mixed White/Black and they are the most BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN YOU HAVE EVER SEEN. They bless my life every day.

I breed , raise, and train Purebred Leopard Appaloosas and I have often thought about breeding one of my Leopard Mares with a Zebra to see what I would get there .... I would certainly give that animal a very high quality Life after all... I am a responsible man!

Peace & Light,
Ray

It's actually good for the gene pool when something new is introduced. It prevents the affects of inbreeding. If you want to know what those are search the internet and be amazed.

me | 4 Jul 2007 - 03:36
how is it that cruel. what do you think a mule is!?!?!?!?!

crimson | 1 Jul 2007 - 10:50
To ~Britt -

Are you also one of those people who think it's wrong for white people and people of color to date, marry and reproduce?

Eclyse the Zorse was an unexpected conception/birth - it's not like the animal keepers put the horse and the zebra together deliberately. What would you have them do, kill the zorse because it's "not right to mix species" ? Horses and zebras, as well as donkeys, all belong to the same genus of "Equus".
Mules come to being by breeding a horse and a donkey. I guess you think that's wrong, too?

Nobody | 1 Jul 2007 - 09:05
I don't see what's so wrong about it. Very interesting mix.
