Life-support machine 'too noisy'

A teenager has turned off the life-support machine of a fellow hospital patient because he said he couldn't sleep with the noise.

Frederik Moelner's attempts to get some kip were interrupted by the noisy machine that was keeping the 76-year-old in the neighbouring bed breathing.

So the 17-year-old, who ended up in the intensive care ward after he was involved in a car crash decided to turn it off, reports Ananova.

Luckily medical staff at the hospital in Southern Germany quickly realised what had happened, and reconnected the lucky pensioner who survived.

They then contacted local police who are now investigating.

OH WOW

I looked up the original article but had no more info. The fact that the guy was in a car crash could mean anything - concussion, pain killers - may be stupid for someone in a normal situation - but the guy might have not been in his right mind.

« How could somebody do that! good Evil boy! »

Why are they in the same ward?

«How STUPID do you have to be to believe this ever happened. I mean do you REALLY think life support machines are kept plugged into regular wall sockets and have big easy to spot 'off' buttons on them?»

As stupid as you, evidently; these machines (called CPAP or NIV machines) are plugged into ordinary sockets and do have easy-to-use on-off switches -- because they're not just for intensive care, they're also used for people who have long-term nighttime breathing problems (obstructive sleep apnoea).

I know; I'm on such a machine myself.

sad Wow, that's horrible. That kid ought to be locked up forever.

Oh, and it's not the youth's fault we're doomed; If anything, it's the older generation's fault for polluting this world.

wadeboggs | 21 Apr 2008 - 07:24
fuckin idiot someone should unplug his ass

jane | 18 Apr 2008 - 05:18
The kid should not have even been in the same room as the patient with the life-support. I know that hospitals have limited space, but if they were in an intensive care unit, they should have separated the "terminal" patient from the 17 year old. What if the older man had died while the boy was in the room? He would have been scarred for life. And did the boy even know that the machine was keeping the gentleman alive?

Namtna,
Actually, Pat's an idiot because the article specifically stated that this happened in Germany. I know America bashing is fun and all, especially with our current elected officials' gross incompetence. But, when you act just like them (making up your own 'truth'), you appear just as stupid and/or evil.

Namtna | 16 Apr 2008 - 22:23
Pat You're cool! AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE OI OI OI!

| 15 Apr 2008 - 14:34
I for one usually assume that big complicated machines attached to people by tubes into their body and located in a hospital are probably just there for looks and dramatic effect. So one could hardly blame him for unplugging it to get a little rest.

Wayne | 15 Apr 2008 - 07:57
Uh, yes. As a matter of fact, they ARE just plugged into a wall. Because they are on mobile carts and have to be plugged in quickly. And turning them off is usually a matter of pressing a red button and then confirming from a prompt, or (more frequently) holding the red button down for about 8 seconds.

So, unless you actually KNOW what you are talking about, do yourself a favor and don't reveal your ignorance by making up facts to suit the reality you'd like to live in and then spewing them out as if they were real.

Remember Gatten's Law of Internet Posting: It is better to think without posting than to post without thinking.

Simply another example of the "it's all about ME mentality" so prevelant today. What happened to compassion and consideration of the needs and desires of others?

Not just the Americans... it's them minorities. They're everywhere I tell you. Lurking around every corner. With their light round eyes and their wavy hair. And they're so tall! We need to get rid of those minorities!

Darsh | 29 Jun 2007 - 00:49
I doubt this is true, it's not that easy to turn off a life support machine, they made it that way in the hospitals to prevent this.
