Just why the turtle crossed the road we don't know but what happened next was no joke.

Saranne Goldinger, 65, was driving along when she spotted the reptile on the road, swerved to avoid hitting it and lost control of her car.

She crashed through a guardrail, tumbled down an embankment and the car flipped over onto its roof.

Then a vehicle that had been driving behind her flattened the turtle to death.

The reptile was crawling across the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey when the accident happend on Tuesday.

Mrs Goldinger, of Cape May, was wearing a seat belt and was not critically injured but state police said her car was badly damaged.

Trooper Scott Farkas said: "All of that for nothing."

The turtle was incorrectly referred to as an amphibian in early reports, turtles are actually reptiles not amphibians.
